For lifelong Manchester City fan Joan Carr, meeting legend Mike Summerbee became a reality when Mike popped into St Ann’s Hospice to say hello along with the Barclay’s Premier League Trophy and the Capital One Cup.
Nurses at the hospice in Heald Green told us how much of a City fan Joan is, she even held a City-themed fundraising event in aid of St Ann’s after having been a patient before.
Joan, 74, a day patient at the hospice from Openshaw, said “I’m so excited to meet him. It’s a big thing in my life; I go to matches with my grandson Michael and I went to see the team taking their trophies around Manchester. Today is something I’ll always treasure.”
During his visit, Mike spent time chatting and taking photos with patients in Day Care, before taking the trophies around the inpatient wards. He said “I’ve been to St Ann’s before, and I enjoy coming here. It’s nice to know you’ve contributed a little to someone’s life and it has a good effect on them. When you come to St Ann’s, you know you’ll be well looked after, it’s a place of comfort.”
Joan, who has secondary breast cancer, enjoys attending Day Care at St Ann’s Hospice. She says “I love everything about it – the people are so nice, everybody is a gem. I’ve become an artist, and my painting today is of course in City’s colours!”
St Ann’s Hospice cares and helps around 3,000 patients (over the age of 16) and their families and carers every year who are affected by cancer and non-cancer life limiting illnesses.
With the City Football Academy well under way, we recently offered an opportunity for our community to be part of history.
The impressive facility will boast a state-of-the-art training facility for all of our teams and will include a new 7,000 seat stadium. On the new stadium there is a 64m x 3m wall where we’ll be demonstrating the power of football.
City in the Community have teamed up with local art company Z Arts to deliver workshops in primary and secondary schools across Manchester, to produce a drawing that displayed 'the football effect'.
The artists (Stephen Nuttall and Ivan Liotchev) along with CITC staff delivered 12 workshops, working with over 300 young people.
Alongside the school workshops, entries were submitted online and through social media to engage as many of our fans from across the world.
Ten favourites, which will be used by Z Arts to inspire their final piece, were selected by a judging panel including a trustee of the Foundation Pat Loftus and Kevin Parker – the General Secretary of the Manchester City Supporters Club.
The winning images will also be displayed in the Family Stand at the beginning of the season.
Congratulations to the ten successful artists; Jack Williams, Jessica MacGregor, Laura Murray, Dorota Golasik, Kelsey Kidd, Lena Przemylska, Theo Donachie, Davina Mistry, Olivia Owen, and Olivia Price.
We will be posting regular updates on the progress of the Foundation Wall as it starts to take shape over coming weeks.

City in the Community's Blues on the Green event will once again be supported by a host of MCFC former players.
Back for its second year on 18 September, local businesses and Manchester City supporters will join a host of players from the clubs past in an enjoyable fundraising golf day.
CITC ambassador Alex Williams, will be joined by Mike Summerbee, Tommy Booth, Gary Owen, Jim Melrose, Stan Horne and Kenny Clements with more players to be announced.
The shotgun start, 18-hole team tournament, takes place at Mottram Hall golf club in Cheshire, with buggies for all players and a range of great prizes and course competitions.
After a great day’s play, all participants will enjoy a three-course meal in the St Andrews Suite, with a charity auction and presentation of the Claret Jug to the overall winners. Williams will again hold a Q&A session, which this year features club representatives Brian Marwood and Tom Glick.
The former MCFC shot-stopper encouraged all keen golfers to come along and enjoy the day.
"We had a fantastic day at Blues on the Green last year, with great support from national and local businesses making the day special and helping us to raise money for the foundation," he declared.
"To have the former players along is fantastic support for us, and they had a great day last year."
